The Book
Art of Century is a collection of thirty titles which glide through the most significant cultural movements from antiquity to the 21st century. Through its first five titles, Naive Art, The Renaissance, Russian Avant-Garde, Symbolism and Art Nouveau, this series offers a new didactic approach to the main currents and major artists who moulded our comprehension of 21st century aesthetics.
The Russian avant-garde was born at the turn of the 20th century in pre-revolutionary Russia. Intellectual and cultural turmoil had then reached a peak and provided fertile soil for the formation of the movement. For many artists influenced by European art, the movement represented a way of liberating themselves from the social and aesthetic constraints of the past. It was these avant-garde artists who, through their immense creativity, gave birth to abstract art, thereby elevating Russian culture to a modern level. Such painters as Kandinsky, Malevitch, Gontcharova, Larionov, and Tatline, to name but a few, had a definitive impact on 20th-century art.
The Author
Evgueny Kovtun studied history of art at the University of St Petersburg and eventually specialised in Russian painting. His primary focus was the art of the beginning of the 20th century and the theorisation of the Russian avant-garde. He worked at the Russian Museum and wrote extensively on the avant-garde, establishing himself as one of the eminent specialists on the subject.
